How to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

While affiliate marketing may be one of the more simple avenues to explore in the world of online business, as with anything there are certain steps that need to be taken in order to maximize your affiliate sales earning potential. If you’re looking for a simple article highlighting how to make money with affiliate marketing for beginners, then this blog post was written specifically for you!

The “Get Rich Quick” Temptation

The temptation for many in the make money online business world is to find the easiest, fastest way to make passive income and spam the hell out of it until you get results.

I’ve fallen into this temptation myself and have several banned Pinterest accounts to prove it.

So, the question is how do you actually generate cold hard cash utilizing affiliate marketing without taking a “spray-and-pray” tactic with your affiliate links using social media as your spam canvas?

Read on and I’ll show you step by step how to actually generate affiliate sales the right way.

Select Your Niche

First things first, you’re going to need a niche.

A niche is anything relating to a specific category of products or services.

The best way to select a niche, in my opinion, is to pick something you enjoy and know a lot about.

Are you someone who enjoys rock climbing? Think of all the different products sold within the rock climbing niche. Off the top of my head, I can think of rope, boots, and harnesses.

Also, think of all the questions that people likely have relating to rock-climbing. After doing a quick search using my keyword tool, I found the following questions that get several hundreds of searches each month that would make for great informational content:

  • How to Rock Climb
  • What to Wear for Rock Climbing
  • Is Rock Climbing a Good Workout?
  • How Many Calories Does Rock Climbing Burn?

No matter what niche you select, like anything business-related you’re going to have to stick with it. Jumping from one thing to the next can prove to be detrimental to your success.

Find Products to Promote Through Affiliate Programs

Now that you have your niche, you’ll have to figure out what affiliate products you want to promote.

Amazon Associates is easily the best affiliate network to get started with since you can promote pretty much anything under the sun. Plus, both their click-through rates and conversion rates are incredibly good compared to other programs.

Right off the bat, I did a search for rock climbing products on Amazon and found a plethora of things we can promote:

Rock Climbing Niche

Once you sign up for Amazon Associates, you’ll see a “SiteStripe” bar at the top of the website whenever you’re signed in:

Amazon SiteStripe

If you want to provide a link to a specific Amazon product, simply go to the product page and click “Text” in the SiteStripe bar.

If you don’t see the URL, click “Get Link” and you should see the affiliate link appear.

Now whenever somebody clicks on this link and makes a purchase, you get a commission.

The great thing about Amazon is that if somebody clicks on your link and decides to buy a different product on Amazon instead, you’ll still get a commission!

If you want to promote specific products that aren’t on Amazon, you can join their affiliate programs instead (assuming they have one).

I did a Google search for rock climbing affiliate programs and found a bunch of different rock climbing affiliate programs including Gear Coop and Trango.

Build Your Website

Next step, of course, is to build your website.

Don’t panic – it’s not as hard as you think.

My recommendation is to purchase a domain, hosting, and set up a WordPress website.

I’ve written several articles on how to do this, and you can read them here:

Write Quality Content Promoting Your Products

If you want people to find your website on Google or share your blog post on Facebook, you need to create content that’s high quality and well-written.

If you don’t feel like you’re a great writer, you can always outsource your articles.

However, this method can prove to be costly, so the best method is to just learn as you go and continually improve your writing with each article.

The way I go about writing content for my niche sites is to first perform keyword research to see exactly what people are searching every month.

I like to go after “best” keywords as these are typically the terms people search for when they’re looking to buy something.

Next, I tailor catchy articles based on these search terms.

For example, when I search for “best” rock climbing keywords I get terms like these:

  • best rock climbing shoes
  • best rock climbing harness
  • best rock climbing pants

So, I’ll probably want to have my articles be titled like so:

  • 7 Best Rock Climbing Shoes for Avid Climbers
  • 9 Best Rock Climbing Harnesses to Secure Your Climb
  • 6 Best Rock Climbing Pants to Improve Your Climb Game

The articles should be between 500-1000 words and should include a handful of internal and external links to promote good SEO practices.

Finally, you should include an affiliate link for each product that you’re reviewing.

There are plenty of other advanced techniques you can do to increase the likelihood of people clicking on your affiliate links, but these are the basics that literally everyone in the affiliate marketing world is doing.

So, if you understand these basics, you’ll do well.

Be Patient and Let Your Website Grow Organically

This may be the most difficult step in the world of affiliate marketing, and that’s to be patient and let your site do its thing in Google.

Ideally, you want to have a website that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors organically rather than having to pay to drive traffic consistently each month.

Because of a fundamental misunderstanding of how Google and search engines in general index and rank websites, people will sometimes think that what they’re doing “isn’t working” and drop everything to try something else.

The truth is that brand new websites can take a long time to truly reach their ranking potential – sometimes up to a year.

So, if you want to know what it takes to generate affiliate income using affiliate marketing, you’re going to have to learn the art of patience.

Keep pumping out great content on your website, sharing your articles on social media, and building natural backlinks to your site.

Over time, you’ll get the traffic you want.

Join a Helpful Community

Joining a helpful and caring affiliate marketing community is one of the most beneficial things you could ever do for yourself.

I’ve joined several affiliate marketing communities, including StackThatMoney and BlackHatWorld, but my all-time favorite has to be Wealthy Affiliate.

This community is a treasure trove full of fantastic information on affiliate marketing, SEO, etc.

Everybody there exudes positivity, so if you need motivation they’re definitely the place to be.
